Containing 5 silverpoint sketches by Rembrandt 1633.
The sketches in this travel sketchbook are only the only surviving sketches by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He drew the sketches on grounded parchment with a silver marker.
Rembrandt and Saskia, his fiancée, were in Friesland in the summer of 1633. They were visiting Saskia’s guardian to discuss their proposed marriage. Rembrandt had a travel sketchbook bound with grounded parchment pages for that trip.
The original sketches by Rembrandt can be seen in the Boymans museum in Rotterdam and the Kupferstich Kabinett in Berlijn.
On the top edge of one of the sketches in the museum in Berlin, you can see holes at regular intervals. We assumed that these are sewing holes and that the sketches formed the pages of a sketchbook.
In the 17th century, this writing notebook was a common utensil. The primed parchment pages were inscribed with silver marker. The silver marker was part of the closure of the booklet. Eyelets were attached to both sides of the band. The marker was pushed through the eyelets, keeping the book closed.
The page could be reused. You washed the page clean and applied a new coat of lime.
The drawings in the miniature travelsketchbook are offset printed by Pantheon Drukkers in Velzen-Noord.
The booklet is bound in leather according to the Gothic binding method. That is, the pages are bound on ropes, then the ropes are threaded through the front and back sides of the binding.
The silvermounting, with the initials of Rembrandt and Saskia and the year 1633, engraved aswell as the closure are being made by Martin Niemeyer of Ndesign.
The price of the booklet is € 545,-
